We went into Bama week nervous and came out of it hoarse (the neighbors have filed a formal complaint). Here’s everything we wrote this week: the Bama postmortem, the college Five and a Fade and, new this week, the NFL picks. Plus where we’re putting our money for South Carolina.
The Bama postmortem
Everybody’s talking about the defense and DeSean Bishop. They should be. Those two things just told you what this team is.

Five and a Fade, College Edition
First, the receipts. Last week I went 4-2. BYU beat No. 2 Notre Dame outright. Auburn beat No. 1 Georgia outright. Kentucky won at Oklahoma, and Arkansas won at Vanderbilt. Throw in the Vols, and that’s five underdogs I backed winning outright on one Saturday.
This week’s theme is simple. Last week lies. The market always overreacts to Saturday, and I’m betting it did again.

Five and a Fade, NFL Week 7: Joey Slye Owes Me Money
In the NFL, I went 2-4. I’d like to thank everyone who texted me about the NFL picks. Both of you. This week: Titans +1.5, 49ers -3, Chiefs +2.5, Vikings -6.5 and Broncos -4.5. The Fade: the crowd is betting Lamar Jackson doesn’t play. I’m taking Ravens +1.5.

This week’s Vols pick
Tennessee +2.5 at South Carolina (plus the Vols moneyline at +112)
The record
Vols against the spread: 3-1
College: 7-3 on the season, counting the Vols
NFL: 2-4
Worth your time
Knox News: Emmett Siegel’s South Carolina preview. He calls it a trap game and still takes the Vols 24-21. We like the winner; we’d just prefer a little more breathing room.
Rocky Top Insider: Q&A with a Gamecocks beat writer. Solid scouting from the other side of the fence. The LaNorris Sellers turnover talk is what we’ll be watching Saturday.
Rocky Top Insider: Jim Knowles named the SEC’s top coordinator. Hold Alabama to 10 at Neyland and the hardware tends to find you.
Rocky Top Insider: Weathersby and Ranvier pick up SEC weekly honors. The league noticed what the rest of us saw from the stands. About time.
Go Vols.
